Cleaning the Eyelid for an Artificial Eye User

7/25/2018

Did you know?

Artificial Eye users who experiences continuous discharge may find it beneficial to regularly clean their eyelids and Eyelashes

What is the Eyelid?

The Eyelid is a thin fold of skin that is used to protect the Human Eye, as well as an Artificial Eye.

Aside from covering the Eyeball behind It, one of its many function is to hold our Eyelashes in place, which also protects our eyes by catching majority of the incoming dust and dirt.

Another importance of the Eyelid is that it's the location of the Meibomian gland, which also produces the Lipid(or Oil Layer) of our Tears.

Problems that may occur

PictureA Rough Artificial Eye can cause many problem. Make sure to have it checked and polished yearly.
There are instances that our Eyelids may become inflamed(Blepharitis) or that our Meibomian Glands gets inflamed as well, causing our Eyelid to become Red and Swollen, sometimes even painful.
It may be caused by many things:
  • Contaminated Makeup
  • Rubbing eyelids with dirty finger
  • Dirty Artificial Eye
  • Rough Artificial Eye
  • Any anything that can irritate the Eyelids, including the lashes.

What to do incase of Eyelid infection?

If you find that your Eyelid is already swollen, please do visit your Doctor to have it examined, as long term inflammation of the Eyelid may cause permanent damages to the Eyelids and the Eye Socket itself.

Why Do we need to Clean our Eyelids?

A Patient wearing a rough Artificial Eye with excess DischargeA Patient wearing a rough Artificial Eye that experiences heavy discharge.
Once medication have started, cleaning your Eyelids and Eyelashes can be a good idea.
Done before the application of the medicines the your Doctor gave you, it can help prevent further infection of the eyelid.

This can also be done even without infection present, especially if you are a heavy makeup user, where you often apply some in your Eyelids/Eyelashes.

This is also important for Artificial Eye Users who experiences heavy mucus discharge, where the discharge reoccurs a few minutes after wiping their Eyelids.

How to Clean you Eyelids/Eyelashes

Things you will need:

  1. Clean Clothe / Facial Tissue / or Cotton Buds(Most Recommended)
  1. Warm Water - This should help to soften and clean any dried up Oil in the Opening of the Oil Gland (Meibomian Gland) in the tip of your Eyelids.
  2. No Tears Baby Shampoo
  3. Clean Dry Clothe
  4. Blephagel (Optional) - This is a very good option as it is designed for people who experiences Blepharitis, or Make up users with a history of recurring eyelid infection
Steps(Baby Shampoo)
  1. Start by washing your hands with soap for at least 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Damp the eyelid with the warm water by using the clothe/tissue cotton buds, for 3 minutes.
  3. Apply the baby shampoo to 2 pieces of Cotton Buds and placing one tip of the Cotton bud at the top of the upper Eyelash, and one below the upper Eyelash and clean for 1 minute
  4. Repeat process on lower Eyelash
  5. Damp and Dry using
PictureBlephagel. A good cleaning solution for the eyelids. It's a gel like substance that you can use as a substitute for baby shampoo. No need to rinse water!
As indicated above, the Warm water should be able to soften any dried up Oil and Mucus which could cause more problem in the future if it were to clog the Meibomian Gland opening, which could lead to infection.

The Baby Shampoo is a good cleaning agent, but if you are able to get a hold of a Blephagel, it is a very good alternative as it's formulated for people with blepharitis(Inflammation of the Eyelid).

Cleaning your Artificial Eye

Did you know? You can use your Contact Lens Solution to Clean your Artificial Eye?

There are many ways to clean your Artificial Eye, and one of them is by using your Contact Lens Solution. Throughout your wearing time, our eye socket (just like our original eye) also produce tears and mucous discharge that will eventually harden and makes wearing the prosthesis uncomfortable.

A Contact Lens solution does not only cleans and disinfects your Prosthesis, but also removes protein build ups.

A specific type of Contact Lens Solution would be those used by Hard Contact Lenses. Aside from Cleaning, Rinsing and Disinfecting the Artificial Eye, it also provides a slippery surface upon insertion of the Ocular Prosthesis, which I find a lot of users more relieved.

I usually advice my patients to soak their Prosthetic Eyes for at least 30 minutes, twice or thrice a week. (e.g. Soak it in the solution while taking a bath). Or just simply rinse the Prosthetic Eye itself. It's a better alternative than using TAP WATER to clean the Artificial Eye.

But this does not substitute the Yearly Professional Polishing and Cleaning of Your Prosthetic Eye.

Christmas in an Eye - An Artificial Eye Fitting

A person received a free Artificial Eye Fitting in partnership with Rotary Club - San Juan West and Rotary E-Club

Artificial Eye Fitting
Fitting of the Artificial Eye
In partnership with Soliman Paroli Eyecare, Rotary Club San Juan West, and Rotary E-club of EDSA Ortigas District 3800, this Christmas season, we were able to give an early Christmas present to Mr Leonardo Bonifacio of Taytay Rizal. Last November, he was fitted with an Artificial Eye by Dr Mark Paroli in his clinic at Soliman Paroli Eyecare, SM City Clark, where he usually does his Artificial Eye Fitting.

Mr Bonifacio  lost his Left eye when he has little. He had an infection which badly damaged his Left eye, and because there were no eye care practitioners in their area, when his eye was checked by an Ophthalmologist, it was already too late and it needed to be removed.

After having his eye, Mr Bonifacio said he was really happy to receive his eye. In fact, he was so excited to go home to show his friends and relatives on the "Something New" about him, especially to his office mates, as he kept the Artificial Eye fitting a secret to everyone.

Mr Bonifacio is now 2nd to receive a free Artificial Eye Fitting as Corporate Social Responsibility of Soliman Paroli Eyecare. Giving hope to those who have lost it, through the tiny piece of plastic we call an Artificial Eye.

A big Thank you to PP Augie Soliman for the referral of the patient.

I will be updating my artificial eye / Prosthetic eye gAllery soon

Due to my busy schedule I wasn't able to update the gallery section of my website. I have had some good Artificial Eye done lately where their Prosthetic Eye looked very close to the original eye.

Aside from that, I am thinking of adding more care and maintenance post to this website. Some of them would be:
1. Follow up check ups and Adjustments of Artificial eye.
2. Consequences of wearing a rough Prosthetic Eye.
3. Materials needed when you are using an Artificial eye in the Philippines.
4. What are the requirements to practice making Prosthetic eye in the Philippines.

Hopefully, I am able to finish all of this before the year ends.

If you want to chat with me, or if you have questions about Artificial eye, most of my Contact details are right Here

Artificial Eye cost in the philippines

how much does an artificial eye cost in the philippines?

Artificial Eye in the PhilippinesPhoto of a Prosthetic Eye made by Dr Paroli from the Philippines
I am getting a lot of inquiries lately on "How much does an Artificial Eye cost in the Philippines?"

In my clinic, we usually treat the fitting of an Artificial eye as a professional service.
To elaborate more, we treat an Artificial eye just like a medical device, and just like any other medical device, we like to treat it as something more than just a plastic prosthetic eye for aesthetic purpose, but rather, something that could keep a person's eye socket healthy while looking aesthetically real.
We also highly recommend follow ups, to check on  the health of the patients eye socket, as well as the health of the Artificial Eye itself. (Importance of having your eye professionally polished)

A Prosthetic Eye will be painted and Polished, and are made uniquely.
In short, we do not just sell a Prosthetic Eye, we want you to experience a Customized Artificial Eye Fitting, in a Clinic, by a Doctor, for a healthy eye socket for a patient.

As for the price, the price will depend on the difficulty of the patient's case, that is why we highly recommend that a patient visits the clinic first, so that we can personally talk regarding the price of their Ocular prosthesis. You can Click here for our contact details, if you have any other questions, and I'd be happy to answer you.
In summary, there is no way to tell how much an Artificial Eye cost in the Philippines, as there is no fix price for a healthy Prosthesis.
