Things to know on handling your Artificial Eye
What is an Artificial Eye?
An artificial eye (ocular prosthesis) is a custom-made device that restores the natural appearance of the eye and supports eyelid function after the loss of an eye. While it does not restore vision, it is vital for facial symmetry and psychological well-being.
Important Regulation in the Philippines: Fitting a prosthetic eye is a specialized medical procedure. In the Philippines, only Doctors of Optometry who have graduated and passed the official licensure board examination are legally authorized and qualified to fit Prosthetic Eyes. Ensure you are treated by a licensed professional to ensure safety and proper fit.

Managing Your Expectations
The first few days with your new prosthesis are a transition period. Use the guide below to distinguish between normal adjustment symptoms and potential complications.
What to Expect (Normal Adjustment) It is completely normal to experience the following as your body adapts to the prosthesis:
- Initial Discomfort: You may feel a sensation of "fullness" or slight irritation as your socket adjusts to the new shape.
- Mucus Discharge: A small amount of whitish or clear discharge is common as the eye naturally lubricates itself.
- Tearing: Your tear ducts may overreact initially, causing watery eyes.
- Slight Redness: Minor redness on the eyelids due to manipulation during the fitting process.
What NOT to Expect (When to Contact Us) The following symptoms are not part of the normal adjustment process. If you experience any of these, contact the clinic immediately:
- Severe Pain: Sharp, persistent pain that does not subside.
- Green or Yellow Discharge: Thick, colored discharge, which strongly indicates a potential infection.
- Swelling: Sudden or severe swelling of the eyelids that prevents them from closing properly.
- Bleeding: Any active bleeding from the socket.
Care and Maintenance
To maintain the longevity of your prosthesis and the health of your eye socket, strictly follow this cleaning regimen. The Golden Rule of Frequency: Only remove and clean the eye every 3 weeks to 3 months. Removing it too often can irritate the socket, while leaving it too long can cause protein buildup.
Step-by-Step Cleaning:
Step-by-Step Cleaning:
- Wash Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your eye or face.
- Removal: If you cannot remove the eye manually, use a clean, specialized suction cup to gently lift the prosthesis out.
- Washing: Gently wash the artificial eye using a mild anti-bacterial soap and warm water. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners or harsh chemicals as they can damage the acrylic.
- Re-insertion: Rinse the eye completely to remove all soap residue before re-inserting it.
Professional Polishing & Repair
Regular professional maintenance is crucial for comfort and preventing infection. Over time, proteins and scratches can build up on the surface, which home cleaning cannot remove.

Routine Polishing Schedule:
- Every 6 to 12 months: You should visit the clinic for a professional polish. This removes stubborn protein deposits and restores the smooth, glass-like finish that keeps your eyelids comfortable.
- Inspect After Dropping: If you accidentally drop your prosthetic eye, carefully inspect it for dents, cracks, or chips.
- Do Not Wear Damaged Eyes: A rough or chipped surface acts like sandpaper against your delicate eyelid tissue and can harbor bacteria.
- Action: If you see any damage, do not wear the prosthesis. Return it to the clinic immediately to have it professionally smoothed and polished.
