Importance of professionally polishing and cleaning an Artificial Eye

Polishing of an Artificial Eye
Polishing of an Artificial Eye
It is very important to have your Artificial Eye Polished at least every Six months(or earlier if needed).

Professionally polishing the Artificial Eye is highly recommended if he or she experiences at least one of the following:
  • Itchy eye socket
  • Irritated socket
  • Increased amount of discharge
  • Appearance of discharge a few minutes after cleaning the eyelid or prosthetic eye
  • Foreign body sensation or rough edges on the Prosthetic eye
  • Dryness
  • Lost of Glossiness
  • Pain while using the prosthetic eye

Cleaning and maintaining your Artificial Eye yourself is helpful but is not enough. Although it helps in removing the superficial dirt and protein build ups, one still needs to have their Prosthetic Eye polished by their Doctor. (Importance of having your Eyes Professionally polished)

By having your Artificial eye professionally cleaned and polished, the Doctor is able to remove protein and bacteria build ups that has affected the appearance of the Artificial eye, as well as check the health of the Eye socket of the patient.

The Doctor is also able to restore the glossiness of the Artificial Eye, making it comfortable again for the patient to wear their prosthesis.

The follow up is also the best time where the Doctor can check the eye socket of the patient for any problem and ensure that they are still healthy.

To summarize this, our goal in Polishing your Prosthetic eye or Artificial Eye is to clean the prosthesis and bring back its glossiness for a more healthy eye socket.
