Can you Swim with your prosthetic eye?

Swimming with your Prosthetic Eye

Can you swim with your Prosthetic Eye?
This question is one of the common things I'm asked from patients when I'm about to release their first prosthetic eyes.

The answer to this question is "Yes.", but with some considerations.

If a patient has a healthy eye socket with a good depth where a Prosthetic Eye is stable, swimming shouldn't be a problem. However, if the eye socket has an insufficient depth and a prosthetic eye is barely holding inside, swimming with a prosthetic eye may be risky. It may cause the prosthetic to fall off.
It is important to note also that Diving is strictly prohibited when wearing a prosthetic eye. It is because the water pressure produced inside the socket can flush out the Prosthesis. It's the same thing when swimming on the beach with strong waves.

The best thing to do when you're about to go swimming is:
  1. Wear goggles. Wearing goggles can significantly reduce the risk of water pressure flushing your Prosthetic Eye from its place. Plus, if in case it does fall off, it will first land on the goggles.
  2. Clean the Prosthesis after swimming. We don't know the microorganisms that are present in the swimming pool or beach. It's essential to clean the Prosthesis after swimming, as well as the surrounding lashes and lids. A good example is a mild soap or Baby Shampoo.
